You’re engaged! Now what?

It’s such an exciting time and a time to enjoy and celebrate. It’s also time to start planning a wedding. One of the most exciting days of your lives, but where to begin?

There are so many details to plan out – from the major decisions like venue and entertainment to smaller details such as flowers and favors. In this blog, we’ll discuss the first few things every newly engaged couple should do and what vendors to book as soon as you can. We will also recommend a few of our favorite vendors to work with.

Be On The Same Page – Communication Is Key

The first major things to discuss with you partner, family or friends is a budget. It is crucial to start planning an initial budget to get an idea of how much money you want to spend, where that money is being spent and some areas that you may be able to save a few bucks. Along with the budget discussion, it is a good idea to discuss wants and needs of each partner. Time of year, colors, wedding style, large wedding or intimate gathering. Some of these items will tie into your budget as well (weddings are seasonal and some months are cheaper than others). One of the most important things is for you and your partner to be on the same page and make compromises so both of you can enjoy your big day.

The Big Three

After getting some things down on paper, you may realize how many things need to be planned and how many vendors need to be vetted and hired. This can be a daunting task. We always talk to couples about The Big Three. These are what we believe are the most important vendors to book as soon as possible. These are also the vendors that typically book out further in advance. Now this may not be the case for every couple, as certain items are more or less important to each couple. After all, every wedding is unique. These three are the venue, the entertainment (band or DJ), and the photographer/videographer.

So Many Decisions

Just dealing with those three vendors is a tall order. There are so many venues to choose from and each one has its own style and offers unique advantages/disadvantages. The entertainment opens up the question of band vs DJ (we have a great post on some pros/cons of each – read it here), but also other forms of guest entertainment such as photo booths or specialty entertainers. And finally your photographer/videographer means you have to decide if you are having a videographer. Most couples will spring for a photographer but go back and forth on a videographer. We find that decision will come down to the budget, but we highly recommend a videographer to capture the excitement of your big day. If you are not in a huge hurry to tie the knot, we recommend a longer engagement. This will allow you to have more control over your vendors and wedding date. It will also give you more time to save money and have to make less compromises along the way.

Our Favorite Venues

These are vendors we have worked with in the past. We only see these vendors from our perspective and sometimes do not see the finished product or some of the behind the scenes interactions with clients. We have simply worked with them on a professional level.
